How I Started Photography

As mentioned in my about section I started photography at 15 years old. What I didn’t mention though is that I started shooting for my youth group at the time. At the time it was called TFS or twenty four seven.

From what I can remember I wanted a hobby to pursue and volunteer in some way. So after praying about it for a while, I felt I needed to give photography a try and then I decided to help out with media at my youth group.

Thanks to help of my parents my first camera gear was a Canon 70D along with a 50mm and a kit 18-135mm lens. My mother also bought me a book for dummies on how to use my camera.

I remember being pretty confused starting out. Confused by my camera’s menu settings and also be confused by what aperture and ISO were. Yet after shooting at my youth group once a week for about three years I was eventually able to teach myself photography.

I’ve always felt that if you want to learn photography shooting in low light is the best way to learn as you’re forced to learn your settings. I heard another photographer say the same thing on a podcast so it may be true.

I honestly never thought I would stick it out this long with photography, but I’m grateful I have. At this point, I don’t think I need to make money off photography to be happy, but I could always use the cash. After all these years I’ve stuck with photography for one reason: because it’s fun.
